Mr. Seltzer: Spanish - M.A. ( Spanish ), M.A. ( History ), B.S. ( French ),
B.S. ( Spanish ),B.S. ( Social Studies ) This will be my 37th year as a teacher, and my 35th year here at Philipsburg-Osceola.
Week of June 7 , 2010 Please note that my preparation period is period 2. ( 2009-2010 )
Hello, and welcome to Mr. Seltzer's web site. This site will be continually updated throughout the year. All students are expected to examine it on the first school day of each week during the school year in order to note any changes which may have occurred since the previous week.
Please note that I am teaching French and Spanish this year, and that the following information applies to all my classes- unless otherwise indicated.
Please note that it will usually take about a week to have quiz/test/classwork/and final exam grades corrected and posted on the Classroll.com web site. The final test ( # 12 ) was given to all classes on ( May 20 ).
This test will be worth 100 points and will focus on the material and class notes which have been covered in class from ( April 28-May 18 ). This will be the 3rd and final test of the 4th and final marking period.
All classes took their final quiz ( # 8 ) on May 6. . This was the 2nd and final quiz of the 4th and final marking period - and was worth 50 points. Students will be given any necessary additional information about the nature of their next test, quiz, or final exam as we get closer to the testing date itself.
Tests , quizzes, and the final exam will be returned to the students and discussed/corrected as soon as possible.
Students should keep all corrected tests, quizzes, and the final exam - as proof that this test/quiz/final exam was indeed taken. All extra credit posters for the 4th and final marking period needed to be turned in to Mr. Seltzer by the end of the day on April 26, 2010. ( Additional info. dealing with the nature of these posters can be found further below in these notes. See # 5 under "grading policy". ) Homework for the week of June 7, 2010 ( for all classes ) will be limited to preparing for the next test/quiz/final exam. The Spanish 4 class will take their final exam on May 27, and the other classes will take their final exams on June 3. Students should plan to take any makeup Final Exams on June 9, 2010. 1) If copying the notes by hand from the text or the board is not a task which a student is able to easily perform , the student in question should indicate this to Mr. Seltzer - and special modifications to this policy will be made whenever necessary.
2) Unless otherwise stated, the only item allowed on a student's desk during a testing situation will be the test/quiz/final exam itself.
Once a test/quiz starts, students may not talk to another student, nor leave the classroom- except for emergencies.
All questions dealing with the test or quiz should be directed to the teacher while the test/quiz is in progress. Students simply need to raise their hand - and I will attend to their concerns. Any student who talks during the testing session- for whatever reason - will be charged with a "warning".
Once a student has agreed to take a makeup test/quiz, he/she will be expected to complete that test/quiz. A student who is too sick to take a quiz/test/final exam will be asked to go to the nurse, and will need to take a makeup quiz/test/final exam according to school policy.
Students will normally take three 100 point tests and two 50 point quizzes, and sometimes several 10 point quizzes/in class assignments during each of the four marking periods.
A final exam will be given at the end of the school year, and will count for 1/13 of the final grade for the year.
This grade will be listed separately on the final report card, and will not be calculated as part of the 4th marking period grade. 3) Family members of all my students are encouraged to contact me by e-mail, or by phone. I can usually be reached by phone at the Senior High School between 8:40 AM and 9:00 AM ( 342-1521 ), or always by e-mail
( wseltzer@pomounties.org ). 4) Progress reports will be sent home at school appointed times in order to alert family members when their student is having difficulty in my class.
5) If school is canceled for any reason on any part of a day when a test or quiz was scheduled, the test or quiz will be given the very next day that the classes in question meet with Mr. Seltzer.
Also, all tests/quizzes/final exams will be given to classes that meet as normally scheduled - even if several classes at the end of the day end up being canceled for some reason ( such as snow ). 6) In the event that Mr. Seltzer is absent on the day of a scheduled test or quiz, the test will be given the very next day that the classes in question meet with Mr. Seltzer.
7) AP Spanish classes have a specific due date for the most recent series of homework assignments. If a student is absent on this due date he/she will need to provide Mr.Seltzer with all owed assignments on the very next day that he/she is present at all in school.
( If an AP Spanish student is present at all in school on the due date for homework, but is absent from the AP Spanish class on the due date for homework, he/she is still expected to hand in all due homework assignments to Mr. Seltzer by the end of that due date.)
Students who fail to follow these requirements will not receive credit for homework which is turned in after the due date.
8) Unless a student was absent on the two days directly preceding a test/quiz/final exam, or had a recent extended absence ( of 3 or more days ), he/she will usually be expected to take the test/quiz/final exam as expected on the scheduled testing date.
However, exceptions to this policy will be made when special situations arise. Makeup tests/quizzes/final exams will need to be made up according to school policy. These makeups will not be the same as the tests/quizzes/final exams that were given in class. However, they will be based on the same materials as the tests/quizzes/final exams that were given in class to the other students. General Policies for Mr. Seltzer's classes:
1) A daily homework assignment is to always bring to class the textbook ( with its bookcover in place if requested ),to take the textbook out of class when class is over,to come to class with: a pen or pencil, a notebook with attached pages (not a three ring binder) , the school agenda, appropriate reading material
( not a school text book, unless it's a reader ) for SSR (Mondays- fifth period only ) ,and any handouts that are currently being used in class. An additional daily homework assignment will be the expectation that all students will copy the daily class notes into their notebooks on the day that these notes are given.
Students who fail to copy the daily class notes into their notebooks ( on the day they are given in class ), and to bring the above-mentioned items to class will be recorded as "unprepared for class". 2) Students will lose points for having any unnecessary stray marks/drawings on their test or quiz paper, and for failing to write their first and last name on the test/quiz paper. Therefore, students are encouraged to not use a pen - but rather to use a pencil with an eraser during tests/quizzes in order to erase incorrect answers, and should avoid placing any form of " art work" onto the test or quiz paper itself.
3) For all those situations (usage of electronic devices, possession of cell phones, open containers, harassment, excessive absenteeism, lateness to class, makeup tests, quizzes, or final exams, behavioral problems, cheating, etc. ) that are already covered by the established school policies as outlined in the student agenda, I will simply follow the procedures that have already been stated for the students of the P.O.Sr. High School. (Except for special situations, makeup tests, quizzes, and final exams must be made up within one week. However, this deadline will often be much less than a full week- as indicated by established school policy. )
A student who arrives late to class because he/she was " getting a pass" - will be marked tardy - and the pass will not be honored, unless it involves the student leaving class in order to attend to some very urgent matter.
Except for very special circumstances, students will not be permitted to leave my Spanish/French class in order to go to another classroom. 4) Students will be given three " free" warnings each marking period for minor violations of class policy : inappropriate behavior, refusing to leave bookbags and gym bags outside the classroom, continual habit of not avoiding those areas of the classroom that are off limits to students, opening/closing windows or adjusting the window blinds without the teacher's permission, inappropriate talking in class, continual leaving from one's seat once class starts without permission ( except for emergencies),failure to sit up and be attentive during class sessions and films, failure to take class notes when requested to do so by the teacher, failure to have the agenda when requesting a rest room /water fountain pass, using the rest room after already having used up the day's 3 restroom /water fountain passes ( except for emergencies),continual habit of not facing the front of the room , continual habit of not having both feet on the ground, continual habit of not having shoes on both feet, continual habit of putting one's head down (unless one is feeling ill ),continual habit of leaving one's textbook and other materials in room 109 at the end of class, entering that part of Room 109 that is off limits to students - on Mr. Seltzer's side of his desks and cabinets, sitting on the heater/desk tops/bookcases,leaving book bags or gym bags in the classroom, adjusting any electronic equipment without the teacher's permission, destruction or defacing of school property, littering in the classroom, etc.
However, each minor violation of class policy after the third incident in the same marking period will result in my recommending one hour of detention for the student due to the four or more incidents in question. It is possible to receive two or even three warnings for one particular violation of class policy- if the student seriously violated class policy.
For all other more serious violations of reasonable and acceptable behavior- including the throwing of any object in the classroom- which will be considered as ENDANGERING THE HEALTH AND WELFARE OF OTHERS , school policy will be followed, and no warnings will be given before detention is recommended by Mr. Seltzer for the student and the incident in question. After such an incident, all future minor or major violations of class policy ( during that marking period ) will result in the student being recommended again for detention. 5) Homework will not be credited if it is late or incomplete - or if it has not been written in a notebook -unless otherwise clearly stated by Mr. Seltzer.
6) Students will lose points on a test or a quiz for failing to: correctly copy sentences/phrases that are given as test questions in Spanish or English , write legibly, use proper punctuation, use capital letters where required, or for likewise failing to use accents that were already clearly and properly placed on sentences that need to be copied as test questions. ( A test answer that is to be written in sentence form needs to have punctuation at the end of the sentence, whether or not the student has completed his/her answer. Failure to do this will result in the loss of test points.
(All the above information in this note ( #6 ) applies to any sentence that the student must write in Spanish or English.)
7) Students will learn that " foreign" simply means "different".
8) Students will learn that the best response to the question:"What do you know?"
is " Not enough, but I'm working on it!"
9) Rule # 1 in my classroom is : " There will be no talking when someone else is speaking."
Students are also expected to listen to and watch all films quietly and respectfully -while sitting up, without commenting on what they are viewing until the entire film is over.
Also, students should avoid unnecessarily interrupting classes that they do not belong to. 10) Any notes written on the blackboard during class should automatically be placed in the student's notebook, unless otherwise clearly stated by Mr.Seltzer.
When absent, students are responsible to get any notes taken in class while they were absent. It is advisable for students to consult more than one of their fellow students in order to obtain an accurate copy of any missed notes. ( In order not to miss notes that are being given in class, it will usually be best for students to copy any missed notes outside of class. )
11) A student who is present on the day of a test/quiz will be expected to take the test/quizz as scheduled, unless a recent extended absence from class or a special situation made it extremely difficult for him/her to be able to properly prepare for the test/quiz in question- or if he /she missed the two days that preceded the test/quiz/final exam. )
If a sports event ( or any other event ) is cancelled on the day of a test/quiz, a student who had anticipated not being present on the day of a test/quiz will indeed be expected to take the test/quiz with the rest of the class-if he/she is present in class on the test/quiz date.
12) No sleeping or "slouching" is permitted in any of Mr. Seltzer's classes. This applies to classes, study halls, computer labs, or advisory sessions.
All students will be expected to sit up during all these sessions, and to have either school work to do , or appropriate reading material that will be read. ( This applies to all students who are assigned to me in room 109, language students, study halls, advisory students, computer labs, etc. )
A student who does not feel well enough to observe these expectations will be asked to go to the nurse.
13) Chewing gum is permitted in my classes as long as it can be neither seen nor heard. When discarded, it should first be wrapped inside a piece of paper, etc.
14) I expect hard work and good behavior from all my students, and will work hard all year to get it.
Students at all levels will be treated as young adults, and will be expected to act accordingly.
15)Once class has started, except for emergencies, students should avoid requesting to visit the restroom, or leave the room or their seats for any reason until Mr. Seltzer has taken roll at the beginning of class. Except for emergencies, students that wish to leave their seats for any reason must first request permission.
Except for emergencies, students who arrive late to class because they were in the restroom or getting a drink of water will be marked late, unless they had already been given a pass/permission from myself or another member of the PO staff that grants permission for the student in question to first attend to such necessities before arriving in my class. 16) Students are not permitted to enter Mr. Seltzer's "zone" ( the area in room 109 behind his desk, cabinets and computer - or inside his closets, desk or shelves).
Students are likewise expected to respect the privacy "zone" of all those people with whom they interact while at the PO Sr. High School .
Students do indeed need permission to sharpen their pencils, or to get: compositon paper from the box, folders from the box, or poster board.
17) During fire drills ( or an actual fire ), students should exit( room 109/the cafeteria) promptly, and then should exit the school between the library and the cafeteria, and then meet Mr. Seltzer at the flag pole. If this exit is blocked, students need to find the closest exit to safety.( usually the auditorium doors )
18) Except for emergencies, after having entered my room, a student always needs a pass or agenda in order to leave my room, and should always sign in and sign out.Theses passes need to be filled out completely.
19) We will conduct class every day, and students will always be dismissed from the seated position- unless otherwise dismissed by Mr. Seltzer.
Therefore, students should avoid requesting a "free" day or an unscheduled film day - since the day's agenda has already been determined by the instructor.
Students are, however, greatly encouraged to suggest possible appropriate topics of discussion for future classes.
A student who continually requests a modification in the current day's schedule will be given a warning for unnecessarily interrupting the day's planned lesson. 20) Students should avoid asking questions during class that do not relate to the lesson topic of the moment.Any question that is not answered in class can always be asked after class- or later in the day or week.
21) Advisory students are expected to sit in their assigned area with their advisory group in the gym and auditorium, and will sit in their assigned seats in room 109.
22) students should avoid littering , or writing on posters, walls, floors, or desks, etc.
23) All students in room 109 are expected to sit in their assigned seats. However, a student should inform Mr. Seltzer immediately if there is some legitimate reason why he/she should have a different seat assigned.
24)25) Any question from the most recent test or quiz ( that was given to the class on the scheduled date ) might possibly appear on the very next test. Consequently , it is advisable for students to make any corrections to tests or quizzes when this material is discussed in class- and to include this information on the very next test study guide.
26) Spanish students are expected to use subject pronouns in all their test answers, even though the usage of such pronouns in Spanish is usually optional.
( Students who fail to do this will lose points on their tests. )
27) Students should avoid trying to answer questions in class if they have to resort to "total guessing"- unless it's a testing situation.
( During a testing situation, students should practice "educated guessing" - but as a last resort only. By this, we mean that students should try to eliminate some possible answers as being most likely wrong, and then make an "educated guess" as to what the correct answer might possibly be. )
28) As we move through the pre -test/quiz period, students are encouraged to compare their notes with those of several of their fellow students in order to verify that their notes are indeed complete and up to date.
( Students that miss a class need to find out what notes and assignments they missed - and to fulfill these obligations before the next test/quiz date as soon as possible. )
29) Students are expected to remain on task, to show respect to their fellow students and to the PO staff, and are encouraged to ask "pertinent" questions and to work with other students as they prepare for their tests and quizzes.
30) AM vo tech students will attend both AM and PM special advisory sessions with their homeroom teacher.
AM Votech students will also attend all PM activity period sessions with their advisory group.
31) A student who needs to be excused during a quiz/test in order to use the restroom will be given a different quiz/test as soon as he/she returns to the classroom.
32) Students must avoid any behavior that possibly endangers the well-being and safety of the staff of the PO Sr. High School.
( Throwing of any item, pencils carried above the ear, etc. is not permitted.)
33) Extra credit posters must have a French or Spanish theme, and must be in good taste . Posters that do not meet these requirements will not receive credit and will not be displayed in the classroom.
34) Students are expected to always sit up while viewing films in my class ( unless ill ), to always have both feet on the ground, and to always wear shoes/sneakers/flip-flops, etc. on their feet. ( A student who does not feel well enough to sit up during a film will be asked to go to the nurse's office. )
35) Any student who needs more time on a test, quiz, or final exam should request this time from Mr. Seltzer - and arrangements will be made.
36) Students are limited to three locker passes per marking period. Any locker passes issued after the first three in any one marking period will count as one of the three "free" warnings that each student is granted each marking period.
37) Students who fail to bring appropriate non school reading material for the fifth period SSR session will be charged with " Not being prepared for class " each time that this occurs. ( However, school readers are acceptable for SSR.)
38) We will conduct class every day. Therefore, after being absent, students should always avoid asking " Did we do anything while I was gone? "
Instead, the question should be " What work did you do in class while I was out , and what assignments am I now responsible for?"
39) During the "activity period", students may only visit another class if some particular
" school activity" is being held there.
40) Whenever possible, students should ask to use the restroom or get a drink as soon as they arrive in class before the bell - if there are still several minutes before the bell will ring. Remember to always request permission to leave my room once you have arrived-even if the bell has not yet rung.
