Behind the Wheel Driving:
Before you can begin driving during a study hall, you MUST obtain a driver's information card from Mr. Taft's office, Mr. Kolbe, or Mr. Vroman. You need to fill out the top portion of the card and have it signed by a parent/guardian on the back before you turn it into one of the Driver Ed. teachers. The Driver Ed. teachers will then work you into the schedule. Seniors will be given preference over underclassmen because their time is limited and underclassmen have the next one or two school years to complete the program. This senario often occurs at the end of each school year. We do, however, try to get to you as soon as we can.
This section of the course gives the student 6 hours of behind the wheel instruction and is intended to enhance the student's driving skills. It is important that participants spend some time driving with parents/guardians before this experience because this time is spent working on numerous skills such as: parallel parking, perpendicular parking, following distance, rules of the road, turns- U, 3 point, 2 point, expressway driving, in-town driving, adverse condition adjustments, securing the vehicle, etc. We can utilize this time more effectively, if the student has some previous basic driving experience beforehand.
If a student has had his/her permit for 6 months, logged 50 hours of driving with a parent/guardian, and is ready to take the behind the wheel exam- he/she may do that at the Senior High School. You need to see either Mr. Kolbe or myself for further information on the driving exam giving during school hours. The driving exam is the last driving session of the Behind the Wheel program.
