Academic Integrity Policy for Mrs. Shealer’s Classes
(An Honor Code)
I expect all students to demonstrate honesty and moral responsibility and to follow ethical standards in testing situations as well as in preparing and presenting materials and assignments done for class, whether that work is done in or out of class.
RECOGNIZING CHEATING
You are cheating if you:
1. Exchange, copy, lax, duplicate, or transmit using any technology or any other means assignments that you intend to turn in as "original" work.
2. Write answers, formulas, codes, key words on your person or on objects for use in a test.
3. Use hidden reference sheets or books or other students' materials during a test.
4. Use programmed material in watches, calculators, or computers when prohibited.
5. Exchange answers with others (either give or receive answers).
6. Submit someone else's assignment as your own, in whole or part.
7. Submit material (written or compiled by someone else) without giving proper acknowledgment
(i.e. plagiarizing or submitting work done by family, friends, tutors).
8. Take credit for group work when you failed to do your part or made little contribution to the group's work.
9. Steal tests, answers, materials, or have unauthorized possession of such materials (and share such materials with others).
10. Help someone else cheat. Sabotage or destroy the work of others.
Recognizing Plagiarism
You are plagiarizing if you:
1. Copy (in whole or in part), quote, paraphrase, or summarize someone else's ideas or words and submit them as your own original work without giving credit to the original source.
2. Use ideas or information or language from outside sources without giving proper acknowledgement. In an academic setting, an "outside source" includes any work, published or unpublished, that is not common observation or common knowledge and that is written or produced by a person other than the student.
Consequences of Cheating and Plagiarism
1. Any cases of suspected cheating or plagiarism will be discussed with the student in an appropriate and timely manner; the student will have a chance to explain his/her actions or work.
2. A meeting may also be requested with parents/guardians, an administrator(s), and/or a counselor.
3. Detention may be given as per the school's discipline code.
4. The student(s) may receive a failing grade on the test or assignment or for the class (as per the district's Academic Integrity Policy given in the Student Agenda).
5. The student may be assigned alternative work to give him/her a chance to demonstrate his/her progress or proficiency (at the teacher's discretion). In this case, the grade will be adjusted to reflect both the student's progress and his/her cheating.
Testing Policy
The following procedures for testing have been compiled by the P-O Senior High English Department. Students will be expected to follow this policy for quizzes, tests, make-up tests, and evaluated oral class work. Failure to adhere to these procedures could result in either detention, or a failing grade, or both.
I. A student should be prepared and equipped with needed class material for test taking at any time.
II. A student should clear his or her desk of all books and extra material, unless it is an open-book test. Books and notebooks should be properly put away under the desk.
III. From the time the test papers are handed out until all the papers are handed back in, there will be no talking or leaving one's seat without the teacher permission.
IV. No hall passes will be given during a test.
V. A student who is absent from school should arrange for make-up quizzes or tests on the day he or she returns to school. Tests should be completed within one week of the student's return to school. In the case of an extended absence, a student will be given a reasonable length of time to make up quizzes, tests, and oral class work.
VI. A student should behave appropriately during oral class work that is being evaluated. Appropriate behavior includes paying attention without talking or disrupting the class.
