Welcome

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Now that the school year is underway, I would like to welcome you and your child again to third grade. We had a great first day and I can’t wait to get started learning with your child. I wanted to send home an outline of how I run my classroom and if you have any questions please feel free to ask me!!

My goal, as a classroom teacher is to make sure that I meet the needs of all of my students, academically, and behaviorally through whole grouping, small flexible grouping, and individualized instruction. In order to do this, I do require that students know what is expected of them behaviorally and academically. We have already discussed classroom behavior, assignments, homework, and other daily activities. I would like to give you a brief overview of some of the things that we discussed.

WEEK’S WORTH OF WORK- About every Wednesday your child will bring home graded papers from that week. There will be a cover sheet to go with the papers for you to sign and make any comments or ask questions about your child’s work. I would like the cover sheet brought back the following day with a signature to show that you saw your child’s schoolwork. You are to keep all papers. You can also log onto our MMS website on the PO webpage at any time to view your child’s grades too.

HOMEWORK- You should expect that your child will have some type of homework most every day that will provide follow up to the daily lesson. You will always find the homework assignments written in your child’s student agenda. The homework paper will be in their homework folder. It will go home every day. I encourage you to set up with your child a scheduled time for homework each day. Students should be able to do most assignments independently, but do help if it is completely necessary. If you notice that your child is not able to do an assignment on his or her own, please jot a note to me on the assignment. I will contact you if your child is falling behind or turning in poor work.

AGENDAS- Everyday your child will be bringing home an agenda. Your child will write their homework assignments in daily. This allows you to see what they are to do each evening. If there isn’t an assignment for that evening, then they will write No HW. I would like for you to sign or initial your child’s agenda each evening so I know they have shared their daily work with their parents.  This agenda is a great resource to keep us connected and if you ever have any questions you can jot me a note in this agenda. I will check the agendas daily to see that the students are writing in their assignments.

CONFERENCES-We will have one scheduled conference during the year, however, if you feel an additional conference would be helpful please call or write to set one up. I will also be in touch with you if I think your child is having difficulty of any kind and I would hope you would do the same.

SNACKS- I do allow students to bring to school a nutritious snack and a bottle of water to school every day. Please do not send water bottles that have twist-off caps. No candy or messy snacks please. Individual snacks should be put in a zip lock bag or small container works well. Our lunch time is at 12:20 pm and I have found that to be a long time between breakfast and lunch for my students.

BOOK ORDERS- I will send home book orders at the beginning of each month and the money (check only/no cash) and the order will be needed to be returned promptly. You will also have the opportunity to order them online if you desire to do so.  The more books you order the more books I am able to provide to your children in our classroom library. And the more reading your child does the better reader they become!! J

FAMILIY LETTERS- At the beginning of each week I will be sending home a family letter for our Language Arts Program called Wonders. It outlines my teacher’s learning goals and provides at home activities for you to do with your child.   The family letter will always have a valuable learning activity on the back of the letter. This is an activity I would like you to do with your child but you do not have to return it to me. Go Math also has a family letter that will outline the learning goals for the upcoming chapter. I will send that family letter home at the beginning of each chapter.

SPELLING WORDS- A list of words will be sent home on Fridays that is on your child’s spelling level. I am asking you to study these words throughout the week with your child so your child can master them before they are tested. We will also do some word work at school to practice them but we don’t spend a lot of time studying them per say. Spelling tests will always be on Friday’s unless noted in their student planner.    If your child loses their list, you will be able to find their words in their agenda under words for the week.

GUIDED READING BOOKS- During the week your child will be reading a book at their level in a small group setting every day. On Friday’s they will bring it home in their homework folder for a second read with you. Please return the book promptly on Monday.

NOTES AND TELEPHONE CALLS- Please feel free to write, e-mail, or call if you have any questions or concerns about your child. I welcome all concerns, ideas, and feedback that affect your child or our classroom. If something is not working, I am more than willing to discuss concerns you may have. I welcome all feedback.   The number at school is 342-2870. My e mail address is tsmay@pomounties.org.

SCHEDULE- A daily schedule will be posted in our classroom and I have the specials here for you. We have an 8-day rotation (for example, if we have a snow day, the schedule resumes with the next day we have school so no specials are missed.) and each special is 30 minutes long.  It goes like this: Day 1-Physical Education and Guidance, Day 2-Computer Lab and Art, Day 3-Physcial Education and Music, Day 4-ST Math and Library, Day 5- Physical Education and Library (book day), Day 6- Computer Lab and Art,  Day 7-Health and Music, Day 8- ST Math and Library.

TRANSPORTATION- If there are any changes in your child’s transportation (changing buses, picking up instead of riding the bus, ect.) please send a note. If I do not receive a note I am required to put your child on the bus.

MEDICAL INFORMATION- If your child has a medical condition that I need to be aware of, it will be your responsibility to inform me. The nurse will inform me of life threatening medial problems but due to HIPPA laws they are not permitted to share medical information. \

In closing I am looking forward to a great year with you and your child!!! I hope your child has a lot of success this year and if you have any questions at any time please call me at the school at (814) 342-2870 or e mail me at tsmay@pomounties.org.

                                                                      Sincerely,

                                                                      Mrs. Tina Smay
